The TikTok deal closed January 22. It didn't get banned, the headlines moved on, and the industry filed it under settled.

The part that actually touches your account never made the headlines.

The new US entity, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, licenses the recommendation algorithm from ByteDance and is contractually committed to retrain it on US user data, run independently from ByteDance under Oracle's oversight.

That retrain is not a maybe. It's written into the deal, and it started at close with no announced end date.

eMarketer flagged the coming year as what it called a critical recalibration period and told marketers to watch early shifts in recommendation behavior, ad delivery, and creator reach.

So the ownership story is done. The algorithm story is running right now, underneath your live campaigns.

Put "TikTok recalibration" on your account review agenda through year-end. This is not a one-week news item.

The biggest mistake with affiliate: treating it as a payout channel instead of a provable one. You’ve been measuring it by revenue attributed, instead of revenue it actually caused.

Legacy tools reward last click, so the number always looks fine, until you ask how many of those buyers were coming anyway. Almost no brand can answer that on the spot.

Use this framework for your program:

> Credit the whole journey, from first touch to last.> Separate incremental sales from ones that would've closed regardless.> Pay on contribution, and hold back payouts on refunds and non-incremental orders.

The program manager still runs the strategy. SATHI just gives them a channel they can actually measure.

A channel you can't prove eventually gets told to cut. Get those three right and the budget defends itself.

Make it provable first.

What Has Already Moved

Users clocked feed changes within days of close, and the sober read via CNBC is that some of that was always coming.

Change the training data and content suggestions move on their own, no manipulation required. That part is baked in before anyone touches a dial.

Underneath the feed, the account-level plumbing changed too.

The new terms of use pulled in precise location data and data on how you interact with in-app AI tools, then wired in explicit ad-network integration on top.

Marketing Dive's NewFronts coverage backed that up, reporting the handoff came with technical hiccups and contested data-collection policy changes, so the bumps were documented rather than rumored.

Then there's the part that lands directly on your targeting.

Trade coverage reports that some ad options needed re-approval and certain audience segments got reconfigured during the infrastructure rebuild.

Nobody has confirmed that at the platform level, and that gap is the whole reason you verify it in your own account rather than trusting a recap.

So open Ads Manager and check your saved audiences, lookalikes, and interest and behavior segments still exist as you built them and still carry the meaning they had in Q1.

Why Nobody Will Announce The Drift

Reach and audience composition can move with your targeting settings untouched.

Adjusted signals change who your campaigns actually reach even when nothing in your account changed.

A retrained model doesn't ship release notes. It shows up as your numbers quietly meaning something different. The CPM line holds steady while the humans behind it change.

Add a standing check that separates two questions.

Did my settings change, or did the platform's read of my settings change?

The second one stays invisible until you baseline against it. That's the whole problem with a silent retrain.

You pay full auction price for reach that quietly changed shape, and the platform never sends the memo.

The Counterweight That Keeps This Honest

This is not a reason to run. The new owners have every incentive to keep advertisers calm.

eMarketer projects TikTok past $17 billion in US ad revenue in 2026, roughly a dollar of every seven spent on US social ads, and forecasts 22.3% US ad revenue growth this year.

Usage held too. Sensor Tower put US daily active users around 95% of pre-announcement levels even after a deletion spike.

Expect drift rather than collapse.

Don't cut TikTok budget on this news.

Pulling out mid-transition burns learning-phase momentum and costs more to rebuild than it does to stay in and measure.

The Move

Baseline your TikTok metrics now.

Here's the snapshot I'm running across my accounts: organic reach variance, CPM, CTR, and audience composition on the top ad sets. Snapshot weekly, review monthly through year-end.

Do that and you can tell retrain-drift from creative fatigue instead of guessing.

Drift shows up as delivery and audience shifts while your creative sits unchanged.

Fatigue shows up per creative while delivery holds. Different fingerprints, different fixes.

Then re-verify your targeting segments still carry the Q1 meaning you built them on.

The decision is simple and it's time-bound.

Baseline now, while your Q1 and Q2 numbers still exist as a reference point.

Wait, and you lose the ability to diagnose at all.

The Decision To Run This Week

1. Put "TikTok recalibration" on the account review agenda through year-end. Stop treating January 22 as the end of the story.

- - -

2. Open Ads Manager. Re-verify saved audiences, lookalikes, and interest and behavior segments still exist and still mean what they meant in Q1.

- - -

3. Add a standing check that separates your own setting changes from the platform's reinterpretation of them.

- - -

4. Baseline reach variance, CPM, CTR, and audience composition on your top ad sets. Snapshot weekly.

- - -

5. Hold TikTok budget through the transition. Don't pull mid-learning-phase.

- - -

6. Review monthly through year-end and diagnose any movement as drift or fatigue using the creative-held-constant test.

Final Thoughts

Operators watch Meta's changelog like scripture and treat TikTok's algorithm like weather.

Right now the weather is being rebuilt by new owners under a legal mandate, on a platform pulling nearly one in seven US social ad dollars.

The drop won't show up in your dashboard the day it happens. It shows up weeks later, as numbers that stopped meaning what they used to.

Baseline this week. The operators who do will know what happened to their reach. Everyone else will end up blaming the creative.
