Q2 Starts in two weeks - Time to Adjust Your Ad Budget
Address These Three Shifts
Are you spending over $50,000+ / month on Meta or Google every month but not getting the results you need or hoped for? My agency is taking on a few more brands to help them scale and hit their goals for 2026. If you’re looking to increase your growth profitably, let’s chat. Yes it's truly only a few more as we're a boutique team of growth strategists
No long-term contracts, we earn our place in your budget every month.
If you’re about to roll Q1 targets forward, the strategy is wrong.
Three things changed in the last 30 days that directly affect what you should be spending next quarter.
Tariff relief improved your margins.
Meta eliminated credit card cash back.
CPMs are normalizing upward out of January lows.
One of these works in your favor. The other two don't.
Here's what each means for your Q2 budget, and how to recalculate before April 1.

The Three Shifts
Shift 1: Tariff Relief Improved Your Margin (Headwind)
The Supreme Court ruling on February 20th dropped China tariffs from 145% to around 25-35% combined. If you ran the P&L audit from two weeks ago, you already recalculated your contribution margins. Now you need to update your break-even ROAS to match.
For a brand sourcing from China with 35% contribution margins pre-tariff, break-even ROAS was around 3.4x. Post-tariff relief, it's closer to 2.6-2.8x.
Moving from a 3.4x floor to 2.6x means you can scale at lower ROAS thresholds. Brands that haven't recalculated yet are leaving room to scale that they think they don't have.
Shift 2: Credit Card Cash Back Is Gone (Tailwind)
Meta's payment change goes live March 31st. Credit card payments are out, and the 2-3% cash back on ad spend is gone with them.
At $100K/month in spend: $24-36K/year lost.
At $300K/month: $72-108K/year.
This won’t show up in Ads Manager. It lives in your P&L as a real recurring cost increase. It belongs in your effective CPM baseline for Q2.
Shift 3: CPMs Are Going Up (Tailwind)
US Meta CPMs ran $7-12 in January - the cheapest window since September 2025.
Q2 historically normalizes 20-35% higher as competition re-enters the auction.
If you're benchmarking Q2 ROAS targets against January or February CPMs, you're going to see performance "soften" in April. The CPM environment changed and you didn't account for it in your targets.
The Q2 Budget Reset (Run This Before April 1)
Three inputs, one output. This takes under an hour.
Input 1: Recalculate Break-Even ROAS With Updated COGS
Pull your top 3 SKUs. If tariff relief dropped costs 10-15%, recalculate contribution margin and new break-even ROAS for each.
Formula: Break-Even ROAS = 1 ÷ Contribution Margin %
Worked example:
Brand sourcing from China, $100K/month spend
Old margins: 35% → break-even ROAS = 2.86x
Tariff relief improves margins to 40% → break-even ROAS = 2.5x
That new floor is the minimum ROAS needed before scaling is profitable.
Input 2: Adjust Effective CPM for Cash-Back Elimination
Take your Q1 average CPM.
Add 2-3% to reflect the loss of credit card rewards.
Use this adjusted number as your Q2 CPM baseline - not Q1 actual.
Input 3: Model Three Q2 CPM Scenarios
Conservative: Q1 CPM +20%
Base: Q1 CPM +27%
Aggressive: Q1 CPM +35%
For each scenario, calculate the ROAS needed to hit your contribution margin target.
Output: a ROAS range for Q2, not a single number.
How to Use It:
Set Ads Manager targets against the base scenario. Set creative testing triggers against conservative - if you're hitting conservative ROAS with conservative CPMs, add budget. If you're below base ROAS with base CPMs, it's a creative problem, not a budget problem.
The Real Risk
Getting Q2 wrong means losing money on bad decisions - pulling spend when CPMs rise normally, or scaling when margins have shifted.
April will feel harder than February. That's seasonal. Plan for it, hold spend and gain auction position.
The account-level work is secondary. Getting the Q2 budget model right first determines whether every other decision this quarter is calibrated correctly.
Final Thoughts
If you haven't recalculated break-even ROAS post-tariff, adjusted your effective CPM for the cash-back change, and modeled what a 20-35% CPM increase does to your targets - you're going into the quarter with the wrong numbers.
Fix it this week, not two weeks in when the data looks confusing.
