Right now, you're probably doing inventory math in your head.

Did we order enough of the hero product?

What happens if it's gone by Black Friday morning?

And what do we sell in the last week before Christmas, when it's too late to ship anything in time?

Meanwhile, there's a product in your store with none of those problems…

It's in your footer, somewhere between the FAQ and the returns policy.

It's the highest-leverage SKU of Q4 for a lot of brands, but my guess is nobody on your team has touched it since the store launched.

The SKU That Plays By Different Rules

I'm talking about the gift card, and this year it should be in your BFCM plan.

Think about what limits every other product you sell in Q4.

You can run out of it, and it has to ship on time.

The gift card skips both, and a couple more:

• It can't sell out. There's no stock behind it, so there's nothing to run out of.

• It can't miss a carrier cutoff. It lands in an inbox in seconds, even on Christmas Eve.

• It has no COGS on the day it sells. Nothing leaves the warehouse and nothing gets packed.

• It closes the shopper who couldn't decide. You know the one. They're buying for a sister-in-law, they don't know her size, and they're about to close the tab.

And people already want these.

US holiday gift card spending runs at about $29 billion.

43% of shoppers plan to buy at least one, and the average card is $53. So there's real demand for a product you've parked next to your returns policy.

Open your site on your phone and count how many taps it takes to find yours.

Q4 is won or lost in the inbox.

When every brand is running a sale at the same time, ads get more expensive and attention gets harder to win... email and SMS are how you stay in front of the people you already paid to acquire, for a fraction of the cost.

> Know your offer beats what your pop-up already gives away, and every email and text says the same thing

> Know what you're sending between sales to build demand, and when to get direct

> Know who hears about each sale first, and who you're holding back

> Know you're landing in the inbox at Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook

> Know your send limits, SMS credits and the card on file will hold up on Black Friday weekend

The problem is most of these get checked too late, when there's no time left to fix them.

That's what makes Retentio's pre-BFCM audit worth knowing about.

Bobby Callaghan and his team look under the hood of your Klaviyo account and show you what to fix for the rest of Q4.

We work on a few brands together, so I've seen their work firsthand. Book a quick call and make sure you crush Q4 and its pinnacle, BFCM.

One Card, You Get Paid Twice

This is the part that makes it a strategy.

When someone redeems a gift card, they rarely stop at the balance. Nobody finds the perfect thing for exactly $50. They find what they want, and the card covers part of it.

Redemption data from January 2026 backs that up. Nearly 60% of redeemers spend more than the card is worth, and the average overspend is $73.

Run that on a single card. This is illustrative, using that average:

Card sold in November = $50

Overspend at redemption = $73

Total order in January = $123

So you made a $50 sale in November, and there's a bigger one still coming.

Now look at when it comes. Gift card redemptions peak in January, at roughly 35% of the year's total.

January is when revenue falls off for pretty much everyone.

Your card holders are the exception. They show up in the slowest month of the year with money they have to spend with you.

That's a second selling season, and you set it up back in November.

Yes, some cards never get redeemed. I don't count that as a win and I wouldn't plan around it.

Then look at who's doing the redeeming. A good share of the people redeeming are brand new to you.

One of your customers liked you enough to send them your way, so you picked up a first-time buyer and paid nothing to get them.

Five Ways To Use It

Here's what I'd do with it between now and January.

1. Give it a real product page. One that's built for gifting and easy to find, so it stops living as a footer link.

2. Offer it every time you sell out. Put it on the sold-out page and in your back-in-stock emails. If they can't have the product today, they can still buy from you today.

3. Make it your late-December product. Once the shipping cutoffs pass, it's the only thing you sell that still shows up on time.

4. Add it to your BFCM offers. A card at full face value is an offer with zero discount, so it sits right alongside the no-discount menu I wrote about.

5. Plan January on purpose. Email your card holders in the first week of the month. It's the cheapest campaign you'll run all year, and every person on that list is carrying a balance they can only spend with you.

Hold those five up against your BFCM plan and see which ones are missing.

Three Checks Before November

1. Does the gift card have its own product page?

2. When something sells out, does the shopper get offered the card?

3. Is the January redemption email drafted now, before November eats your calendar?

If any of those is a no, that's your task for the week.

To be clear, this won't be the hero of your Q4. Your main products and your offer still carry the quarter.

Think of the gift card as the backup for the days when stock runs out or shipping closes.

You already have the product. Get it out of the footer and into the plan before November starts.
