Shopify flipped a switch in late March and millions of stores became shoppable inside ChatGPT, plus Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini.
It was opt-out, not opt-in.
If you run an eligible US Shopify plan, your catalog has been live in that channel for three months. Nobody asked you, and across the accounts I'm in, almost nobody has actually opened the setting to look.
In February I said to get your product data AI-ready before the rollout. The rollout happened, by default, while everyone was watching their ad accounts.
So this isn't a "should you enter the channel" question anymore. You're in it. The only open question is whether your data makes you recommendable or invisible.
What Actually Happens Now
A shopper asks ChatGPT for a recommendation. Shopify Catalog, the structured product database Shopify builds from your store data, surfaces matching products inside the answer.
The buyer browses in chat, then completes the purchase on your storefront, in an in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on desktop, through your own checkout.
You stay merchant of record. The order lands in your Shopify admin with ChatGPT referral attribution. You keep fulfillment, returns, support, payment methods, and the customer relationship.
The in-chat checkout pilot from last year is gone. OpenAI pulled back from completing Shopify sales inside
In-chat Instant Checkout still exists for Etsy and a handful of enabled merchants, but the Shopify path lands on your storefront.
> Open your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and confirm your status. Plenty of operators have never opened it once.
Why This Version Beats the One It Replaced
The old pilot closed the sale inside OpenAI's environment. The current model hands you a high-intent, already-decided buyer at your own checkout.
You keep the session, the data, the customer, and the post-purchase flow, with no marketplace sitting between you and the sale.
On Shopify's last earnings call, Finkelstein put it plainly: the economics are the same as if the order happened in your online store. That is the opposite of the Amazon trade.
Here is the inversion worth naming. There is no creative to build and, per OpenAI, ranking in the answer is organic. But there is a landing page again. Your catalog data earns the recommendation. Your PDP and site speed close the buyer the AI sends you.
> Pull your AI-referred sessions (ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini referrers, or direct traffic with no touchpoint) and compare their conversion rate against paid. High-intent referrals should clear it, and if they don't, your PDP is the leak, not the channel.
The Feed Is Your SEO
Ranking is organic and unsponsored. You can't buy placement.
When several merchants sell the same product, OpenAI says it weighs availability, price, quality, whether you're the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled.
Relevance to the shopper's actual question decides whether you appear at all.
On the Shopify path, Catalog reads your structured product data. These surfaces reward clean attributes, complete titles and descriptions, and real-time accuracy.
Thin or missing data does not get penalized. It just never surfaces.
Clean, natural-language product data is the entire lever you have.
Google's side already pointed the same direction. The forward-looking data language in the new Merchant
Center terms pre-clears your feed for exactly this kind of AI surfacing.
> Read your top 5 SKUs' titles and descriptions as if you were the AI answering "what's the best X for Y." If the answer isn't extractable from your own data, you are invisible for that query.
The Two Open Questions
Two things are still in flux, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
Fees. The Shopify channel currently adds nothing beyond your standard processing, but the broader in-chat checkout terms keep shifting and nothing is contractually locked.
That uncertainty is the argument for building the organic position now, while it costs nothing.
Control. Discovery happens in an environment you don't own, and the ranking inputs can change under you.
That is the same platform dependency you already manage on Meta and Google.
> Decide your position on purpose. MAP-enforced, exclusivity-bound, or wholesale-only brands are the real opt-out cases. Everyone else stays in.
Run This Week
1. Check your Agentic Storefronts channel status in Settings > Sales channels. Confirm you're in, or out, on purpose.
- - -
2. Audit your top 5 SKUs for natural-language descriptions, complete structured attributes, and alt text. Get those recommendation-grade before you touch the long tail.
- - -
3. Verify real-time inventory and price sync. An AI won't recommend what reads as unavailable, and a stale price is a returned order waiting to happen.
- - -
4. Confirm your review data flows onto your product pages. Quality signals feed the ranking.
- - -
5. Set up AI-referrer tracking so this channel actually shows up in your numbers by Q3.
Final Thoughts
Operators are treating AI shopping like TikTok Shop. Interesting, not urgent.
The default-on fact breaks that frame. There's no adoption decision left to defer. No campaigns, no auction, no creative to ship.
Readiness is pure data hygiene, the cost of doing it now is close to zero, and the same catalog work compounds into whatever surface launches next.
Copilot, AI Mode, and Gemini are already reading the same data.
The channel costs nothing to be good in, and you're enrolled either way.
Decide to be recommendable before volume decides for you.
